I got sick of my single-use coffee pod machines always breaking, and when I learned how easy and inexpensive it is to make pour over coffee, I jumped at the chance to switch. All you really need is a kettle and a pour over dripper—and when we found one with reusable filters, it was a no-brainer. Less waste, no fragile mechanics, and a tasty, inexpensive way to make coffee.
Less Waste, Smarter Resources
- Billions of pods = billions of problems. In 2015, over 10 billion single-use pods were sold in one year—most of which ended up in landfills. The aluminum and plastic in pods are tough to recycle because they mix materials.
- Drip coffee isn’t innocent either. Pot brewers waste energy and beans—people often make more than they drink, and the hot plate burns electricity while the coffee goes stale.
Energy Use: Boil Only What You Need
With pour over, you heat only the water you need and brew once. Single-use coffee pod machines draw standby power, and drip makers keep warming coffee for hours—driving up unnecessary energy use.
Materials Matter
Pod machines are complex electronics made from plastics, metals, and circuit boards—things that are energy-intensive to produce and tricky to recycle. Pour over gear? Just a cone, filter, and kettle—low-tech, low-impact.
On Carbon: Coffee Waste is the Real Culprit
Lifecycle studies show that no matter the brew method, wasted coffee beans carry the biggest carbon footprint because growing, shipping, and roasting beans are so resource-intensive. Pour over helps by letting you brew exactly what you’ll drink.
Final Take
Pour over isn’t just “slow coffee.” It’s a simple, precise way to brew that reduces waste, saves energy, and avoids the mountain of plastic and aluminum created by single-use pods. Better for your tastebuds, better for your wallet, and better for the planet.
